A few helpful tips to help you tackle the troublesome chores

At Homestead Maid, we know you don’t always have the time or the energy to clean your house. And let’s face it, we all have chores that we dread and avoid, such as mopping the floors, cleaning the oven, or scrubbing the toilets. The problem is that cleaning tasks can quickly accumulate if left unchecked, and before you know it, you’ve got a to-do list that’s a mile long.

Don’t Despair

As one of Toronto’s premiere providers of house cleaning services, we’re here to tell you that cleaning all of your home’s many nooks and crannies isn’t as daunting as you think. Here are a few helpful tips to help you tackle those troublesome chores:

  • Stained grout lines: The usual suspects that plague your grout lines, such as mould, grime, dirt and mildew, can be dealt with in several different ways. Light stains can be cleaned using a half-and-half mixture of warm water and vinegar and a stiff brush. For tougher stains, try using oxygen or chlorine-based cleaners, but be sure to follow the directions and to keep the area properly ventilated.
  • Wax in carpet. You can play it hot or cold when it comes to wax in your carpet. Apply a damp linen cloth over the wax and then heat the affected area with an iron on medium heat. Once the wax attaches itself to the cloth, remove any leftover residue with rubbing alcohol. You can also freeze the wax using an ice pack, and after breaking it up with a blunt object, simply vacuum the pieces.
  • Heat rings on wood surfaces. One way to remove unsightly heat stains from wood surfaces is, oddly enough, applying more heat. Place a clean cotton towel over the scorch mark, put an iron on the towel directly over the affected area and set it to steam. After a minute or so, the stains will disappear, and all you’ll need to do is wipe down any remaining moisture and water. If this seems a little too adventurous, you can always apply a half-and-half rub mixture of toothpaste and baking soda or vinegar and olive oil to remove the marks. For any of these treatments, we strongly recommend that you start slowly and work carefully, as different types of wood and different finished will react differently.
  • Dingy showers. Using undiluted white vinegar is an easy and affordable way to get rid of the bacteria and germs lingering in your showering. Simply wipe down your shower walls using white vinegar and then rinse using hot water to get rid of mould, mildew and hard water deposits.

When cleaning, always remember to take your time and rest, to never mix cleaning products and to always work in well-ventilated areas when using products that contain chemicals.
